Happy International Women's Day

Happy International Women’s Day!

Today is a day when women around the world are celebrated. It is a day where we take into consideration all of the amazing things about women all around the world.

Women play many important roles in our society. They are mothers, step-mom’s, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, cousins, sisters and friends.

The traits that come with being a woman are nurturance, sensitivity, sweetness, supportiveness, gentleness, warmth, cooperativeness, expressiveness, modesty, humility, empathy, affection, tenderness, being emotional, kind, helpful, devoted, compassionate and understanding. We love all of these things about women!

The History of International Women’s Day

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

International Women's Day was first celebrated in 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The centenary was celebrated in 2011, so this year we're technically celebrating the 111th. Things were made official in 1975 when the United Nations started celebrating the day.  Today, International Women’s Day is celebrated throughout the world.

Here are just a few ideas of how to celebrate International Women’s Day this year.

  1. Use the hashtag #IWD2022 and show your support on your favorite social media channel.

  2. Gather with your favorite female friends and celebrate their strengths.

  3. Thank the women you get to work with.

  4. Attend a local or regional IWD celebration.

  5. Set up a (virtual) coffee date with a woman in your network.

  6. Start a book club with your colleagues or friends.

  7. Support women-owned businesses.

  8. Host a film screening.

  9. Donate to charity.

  10. Acknowledge the women in your life with a text message, phone call or visit.

No matter how you celebrate, Happy International Women’s Day! We celebrate the women of the world this day.

Best,

Women's History Month Celebrated

March is Women's History Month. During this month, International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual event held on March 8th celebrating the achievements of women around the world. According to the International Women’s Day website, “This is one of the most important days of the year to celebrate women’s achievements; raise awareness about women’s equality; lobby for accelerated gender parity; and fundraise for female-focused charities”.

International Women’s Day has been officially recognized since 1911 when “more than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination”.  It was not until the 100th anniversary of the first International Women’s Day that President Barack Obama declared March “Women’s History Month'' and called on “Americans to mark IWD by reflecting on ‘the extraordinary accomplishments of women’ in shaping the country’s history”.

The International Women’s Day campaign theme for 2022 is Break the Bias and asks everyone to “Imagine a gender equal world; a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination; a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive; a world where difference is valued and celebrated”.

Throughout time, women educators have made significant contributions to the field of education and we believe they should be honored and celebrated every day. We are thrilled to be taking this one special day to thank the many women who have changed the ways we look at education.

This year, we’d ask you to be a part of the International Women’s Day movement. “Breakthebias” with us and celebrate the female educators in your life both locally here in Ocala and globally.

Best,

Manal
